NINE

Sophie

My phone started ringing. I saw I had several missed calls from Anne, Dad, and Ross and now Melissa was calling. Crap, I’d forgotten she was coming to do the pregnancy test.

“Hi,” I said as I called Melissa back, not being in the mood to see or speak to anyone. Kacey was asleep and right now I needed rest.

“Hey you. I’m on my way to do the test, did you pick one up?”

“Melissa, can we leave it? I’m sorry, but Calvin has woken up and he thinks he’s eighteen. He said some things to me that were cruel, and I just can’t face knowing whether I’m expecting or not.”

“Oh gosh, so where do you stand with him?” she asked.

“I’m the girl he had sex with in the barn, and now wants nothing to do with him.”

“Oh, shit. I’m so sorry. How about I come to you tomorrow night and do the test. I know you aren’t in the mood, but you must, Sophie,” Melissa suggested.

“I know. I will. I just need time. Everything is shit at the moment, I don’t know whether I’m coming or going.”

“I understand that, but you must think of yourself. I guess he’s suffering with memory loss, which occurs sometimes after severe brain injuries,” she said.

“Yeah, something like that. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

I hung up and my phone rang again. It was Ross.

I stared at his name and decided to answer him.

“Hello,” I said with no enthusiasm.

“Sophie, are you ok, I know what Calvin said to you, he told me. I had to ring to make sure you were alright. Anne said you left quickly after speaking with him and well, I know he thinks he’s eighteen, and you and him...”

“We had sex in the barn, and I’m ignoring him. I know, I don’t need to be told half a million times.”

“He also said something else which I had to talk to you about,” Ross said as he moved.

“Enlighten me. Did he call me a tramp? A slut, a whore who opens her legs, if only he remembered the truth.”

“No, well yeah, he sort of said one of those things anyway, but he laughed it off. We all know what year it is and what’s been happening, but are you expecting?”

I froze and placed my hand across my chest. A lump formed in my throat.

“Calvin, told me, he said you’re expecting, again,” he informed me.

“He remembered that and told you?” Ross shook his head. “Don’t tell anyone, please,” I begged in panic.

“Of course not, but they need to know, especially after what happened with Kacey and now not having Calvin’s support, well until his memory comes back.”

“Ross, I’m aware of my health, and what happened, and what is happening, only right now I have enough to deal with without you pestering me, just mind your own,” I growled.

“Yeah, sure I’ll mind my own, unfortunately Calvin isn’t here now to help you, but I will be here. Have you done the test?” he asked.

“No!”

“Don’t you think you should?”

“No, just leave me alone.
